IND VS ENG 1 Test Series
IND vs ENG Highlights, 1st Test Day 5: England produced a superb show on Day 5 of the Headingley Test and defeated India by five wickets to go 1-0 up in the five-match series. The batters made easy work of the staggering 371-run chase, which is now the second highest by England in the traditional format. It all started with Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley leading the show after resuming from the overnight total of 21/0, still 350 runs behind the target. The pair went to add 188 for the opening wicket and gave England the much-needed momentum in an overcast Leeds. Duckett, who was dropped in his 90s by Yashasvi Jaiswal, went to hammer 149(170) while Crawley chipped in with a pivotal 65(126).
England dominated the opening session and continued to dictate proceedings in the second. However, there was a change of fortune for India after a brief rain delay in the second, which saw the visitors inject four blows. It all started with Prasidh Krishna getting rid of Crawley and shortly after castled Ollie Pope for run-a-ball 8. Duckett then led the show with Joe Root before Shardul Thakur struck in consecutive balls. He first dismissed Duckett and then Harry Brook, raising hopes of an Indian comeback. Ben Stokes and Root then added 49 for the fifth wicket, following which the England skipper was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja for 33(51). Root, who is regarded as one of the best in business, eventually returned unbeaten on 53(84), while wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith scored 44(55) and finished the match with a six “ind vs eng.”.
The match began with England winning the toss and inviting India to bat. However, the decision backfired as tons each by Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant powered India to 471/10. Bumrah then went to pick five wickets but with hardly any assist from others, particularly on Day 2, England managed to pile 465/10 in response, allowing India a negligible 6-run advantage. The second innings saw KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant dictate the show as they slammed tons each, helping India muster 364/10, ind vs eng.
With England emerging victorious after chasing down a 371-run target in the first Test, the young Indian cricket team will aim to bounce back in the five-match Test series. The second match, scheduled to take place at Birmingham’s Edgbaston, will be played after a break of over a week.
A week could be enough for India head coach Gautam Gambhir to come up with a renewed plan to counter Brendon McCullum’s Bazball era, which has seen captain Ben Stokes willing to chase any target. This is a departure from the classical Test style, where teams preferred to bat first to avoid batting in the fourth innings due to the unpredictable nature of the pitch, ind vs eng..
England’s thrilling 5-wicket victory over India in the first Test marks a strong start to the series, giving them a crucial 1-0 lead in the five-match contest. Despite India’s efforts and home advantage, the visitors showcased resilience and tactical brilliance, especially in the fourth innings. With momentum on their side, England will look to build on this win, while India must regroup quickly to bounce back in the remaining matches. The stage is now set for an exciting and competitive series ahead.
